4,798 posts from 55 Brunei brands

Every dot is a real Instagram post from March 2025 to September 2026: restaurants, retailers, banks, tech. Each block is one brand.

What to do this week

  1. 1

Turn single images into carousels. A carousel of photos you already have does about as well as a Reel (+31% against +34%).

  2. 2

Move your posting to the evening. 6pm to midnight gets +28%, and most brands are posting in the day.

  3. 3

Collaborate. Tagging a partner, supplier or creator: +78%.

  4. 4

Put a face in your sales posts. Faceless hard sells lose 22%.

  5. 5

Skip the hashtag and emoji rituals. They made no difference.

  6. 6

Chase engagement, not volume. It’s what grows your following. Posting more didn’t.

Know what works. Then keep doing it.

Knowing what works is half of it; posting it week after week is the other half. Mixplate studies the top brands in your niche and turns what’s working into a steady plan of ready-to-post content.

Instagram in Brunei: your questions, answered

What is the best time to post on Instagram in Brunei?

The evening. Across 55 Brunei brands, posts published between 6pm and midnight got 28% more engagement than the same brand’s other posts, and 9pm to midnight was the strongest block of the day. Early morning, 6am to 9am, was the weakest, at 23% below a brand’s usual. Yet 6 in 10 posts go out between 6am and 6pm.

Reels or carousels: which works better in Brunei?

They perform about the same. Reels averaged 34% above a brand’s usual post and carousels 31%. Compared head to head within the same brands, the gap was just 3%, and carousels won in 20 of 49 brands. Single images were the weakest format, at 28% below usual, even though they are the most common (38% of posts).

Do hashtags still work on Instagram in Brunei?

Not measurably. Posts with 4 to 10 hashtags performed about the same as the same brand’s posts with none. The same was true of emoji, ending a caption with a question, adding a call to action, and posting on a Friday.

What kind of Instagram posts work best for Brunei businesses?

Posts that tag another brand or creator, usually a collaboration, got 78% more engagement than a brand’s usual post, and giveaways 84% more. Carousels and Reels beat single images. The one type that clearly underperformed was the hard sell with no person in it: product and promo posts without a face got 22% less.

How do you grow an Instagram following in Brunei?

Get more engagement per post. Brands with above-median engagement grew their followers almost 4 times as fast as the rest: a typical 2.0% a month against 0.5%, or roughly 26% a year against 7%.

Does posting more often grow your Instagram faster?

Not on its own. The busiest third of brands, by posts per week, grew no faster than the quietest third (0.9% against 1.0% a month). What brands posted mattered far more than how much.

How we did this

We took every post from the 55 Brunei brands Mixplate tracks that had at least 20 posts between March 2025 and September 2026: 4,798 posts in all. Engagement is likes plus comments over followers, measured at least three days after posting.

Each post is compared with the same brand’s usual post, and every brand counts once, so a big account can’t drown out a small one. A breakout is a post with at least 3× its brand’s usual engagement. Ranges are 95% intervals across brands. Post types (hard sells, people on camera) were labelled by AI; giveaways and tags come from the caption. Follower growth covers the 49 brands we tracked for at least two months.

This is observational: it shows what goes together, not what causes what. Tagged posts are often collaborations, but not always. The sample leans towards restaurants, and engagement here is almost all likes.
